Third Sunday of Advent – Rejoice, the Lord Is Near

The Third Sunday of Advent marks a joyful turning point in the season. Known as Gaudete Sunday—from the Latin word meaning “Rejoice”—this day reminds us that our waiting is not heavy or burdensome, but filled with JOY. Christmas is drawing close, and the nearness of Christ changes everything.

On this Sunday, the tone of Advent lightens. The purple vestments give way to rose, and the rose-colored candle on the Advent wreath is lit. This visible change is intentional: it’s a reminder that even in seasons of preparation and sacrifice, joy has a rightful place.

The Gospel often continues with John the Baptist, but now the question becomes deeply practical:

“What should we do?”

John’s answer is surprisingly simple—live justly, act with integrity, and treat others with generosity. True joy, we learn, isn’t found in excess or comfort, but in right relationship—with God and with one another.

This Sunday teaches us that:

  • Joy is rooted in hope and peace, not in perfection.

We rejoice not because life is easy, but because God is faithful.

  • Christian joy is active.

It shows up in kindness, fairness, humility, and compassion.

  • God is already at work among us.

John reminds the people that the Messiah is already present, even if unrecognized.

As the rose candle is lit, it signals a powerful truth:

The waiting is almost over. The light is growing stronger. Joy is near.
